Bike Helmet Cleaning & Sanitizing Process

Supplies Needed:
- Mild soap or helmet-safe cleaner
- Disinfectant spray (EPA-approved, non-toxic)
- Microfiber cloth or disposable wipes
- Soft-bristle brush or sponge
- Warm water
- UV sanitizing station (optional)
- Disposable gloves
Daily Cleaning & Sanitization (After Each Use)
- Pre-inspection:
- Check helmets for visible dirt, sweat, or damage.
- Separate damaged helmets for repair or disposal.
- Surface Cleaning:
- Dampen a microfiber cloth or sponge with warm soapy water.
- Gently wipe down the outer shell and inner padding.
- Use a soft brush for tougher dirt spots.
- Disinfecting:
- Spray the inner padding and straps with an EPA-approved disinfectant.
- Allow it to sit for the recommended dwell time.
- Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.
- Air Drying:
- Place helmets in a well-ventilated area to air dry.
- Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent material degradation.
- UV Sanitization (if available):
- Place helmets in a UV sanitizing station for additional germ elimination.
- Storage:
- Once dry, store helmets in a clean, designated area away from dirt and moisture.
Weekly Deep Cleaning
- Remove Padding & Straps (if detachable):
- Wash with mild detergent and warm water.
- Rinse thoroughly and air dry completely.
- Deep Clean Exterior:
- Wipe down the outer shell with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Disinfect thoroughly, ensuring no residue remains.
- Reassembly & Inspect:
- Once all components are dry, reattach the padding and straps.
- Inspect for wear and tear before returning to circulation.
Additional Best Practices:
- Helmets should not be shared without cleaning.
- Replace helmets showing signs of wear, cracks, or degraded padding.
- Train staff on proper sanitation procedures.
